  2. Warm Up: • Map Practice: Study your map for 5 minutes. • Grab a white board, a marker, and a napkin. • Put your maps away and let’s practice!

  3. Who are the Aryans? • Around 1500 B.C. large numbers of people began to migrate into India. • 3000 years of migrations • New ideas and customs introduced • These earliest immigrants were known as Aryans- warriors and herders • The word Aryan means “noble”

  4. Migrations Paths

  5. Why did they migrate? • May have migrated due to overpopulation in their homeland. • Traveled through the Hindu Kush into the Punjab and the Ganges plain. • Defeated the local natives. • Brought horses, chariots, and iron tools with them.

  6. Focus Questions: • Who were the Aryans? • What paths did they take to get to India? • Why did they migrate? 4. What did they bring with them?

What is Hinduism? • A religion that originated from the Aryans- still seen in present-day Indian culture and beliefs • Sanskrit- a holy language used by the Aryans, thought to be spoken by the gods; many languages that are spoken in India today are based on this • Vedas- the four holy books, written in Sanskrit

  8. Hinduism • One of the world’s oldest religions • Believe in 3 main gods: • Brahma- the Creator • Vishnu- the Preserver • Shiva- the Destroyer • Below these main gods are many other lesser gods

What do they believe? • Teach that people live many lives until they reach spiritual perfection. • Reincarnation- the belief that the soul lives on after death and returns to life in a new body • If you live a good life and obey religious teachings will be reborn into a higher social position. • Those who do not lead good lives will return as lower life forms.

  11. Holy Cow! • Hindus also believe animals have souls • Cows are sacred animals so they do not eat beef

  12. Focus Questions • What is reincarnation? • Why are cows seen as holy?

  13. Compare and Contrast • How is Hinduism similar to Christianity? • How is it different?
