  1. Kermit Learns Kinematics Quantities Don’t let the details leave you in the dust! KL physics 10

  2. Kinematics is… The physics of how an object moves: Howfar does it go. Howfast does it go. Howfast it gets faster or slower. Howlong does it take.

  3. Watch for these vocabulary words. Vector Scalar Distance Displacement Speed Instantaneous Speed Velocity Acceleration

  4. Vector and Scalars, Huh? Vector – a quantity that has magnitude and direction. Example: You drive 50 miles east. The plane flies 300 mph south. Scalar - a quantity that has magnitude only. Example: I waited for 30 minutes. He drove 75 mph.

  5. Distance vs. Displacement Finish displacement distance Start

  6. Speed • A measure of how fast an object’s position changes. • Scalar (magnitude only) • The ratio of distance traveled to time interval • Measured in units like mph, kph, m/s, ft/s and cm/s

  7. Average Speed Average Speed = total distance traveled time v = d t

  8. Instantaneous Speed Good news! No equation! This is the speed at a single instant in time. When you check your speedometer you are checking instantaneous speed.

  9. Velocity • Velocity is a vector (magnitude and direction matter) • Velocity is the ratio of displacement to time interval • Velocity is measured in units like mph, kph, m/s, ft/s and cm/s

  10. Velocity Velocity = displacement time v = d t Change in … remember slope

  11. Kermit wants to know…What if I want to change my speed? Possible responses: Too bad for you. Why would you do that? Isn’t this speed good enough? What do you mean? I’m sure there’s some physics to learn about.

  12. Yep, there’s more physics! Acceleration – It is a change in velocity. It is a vector (you need direction and magnitude) The ratio of velocity to time interval. Acceleration is measured in units like m/s2,ft/s2,cm/s2

  13. Acceleration Acceleration = change in velocity time a = v t

  14. Some Helpful Equations vf = vi + at d = vit + ½ at2 These will help you find: vf - final velocity vi - initial velocity a – acceleration d – displacement t - time

  15. Making Kinematics Understandable
