  1. Introduction to The Human Body Systems Levels of Organization

  2. Levels of Organization • Cells working together to do a specific job form tissues • Tissues working together to do a specific job from organs • Organs working together to do specific jobs form organ systems • Organ systems work together to create an organism

  3. Types of Tissues • Tissues are groups of cells that work together to form a specific function • The four main types of tissues are: nervous, muscle, epithelial, and connective

  4. Nervous Tissue • Sends electrical signals throughout the body • Nervous tissue can be found in the brain, spinal cord, nerves and the sense organs (eyes, ears, mouth, skin …)

  5. Muscle Tissue • Enables movement – muscle cells contract and relax • Three main types of muscle tissue: skeletal, smooth and cardiac

  6. Epithelial Tissue • Covers and protects • Covers our bodies: skin • Helps line our digestive tract • There are several different types of epithelial tissue which are categorized by shape and structure

  7. Connective Tissue • Tissue that joins, supports, insulates and nourishes • Examples: fat, cartilage, Tendons, ligaments, bone and blood

  8. Organs • Different tissues work together to create an organ • Part of the body that has a specific job. • Examples: heart, lung, kidney, skin, stomach, brain …

  9. Organ Systems • Different organs work together to perform a specific function • We will study 11 main systems • Skeletal, muscular, integumentary, cardiovascular, respiratory, lymphatic, digestive, urinary, nervous, endocrine and reproductive systems
