(D) • Some of you will be able to make sustained and detailed comments on themes and ideas, using precise quotations. (C)

  3. Write a short description of this picture of Miss Plaza when she was young. You MUST use • A simile • One example of alliteration • One example of personification.

  4. What is meant by the term ‘theme’?

  5. Mini Plenary On your mini whiteboard, write a comment about the themes or ideas in the poem. Hold them up. (Remember! To get a C it needs to be more detailed! )

  6. Time for some imagination... In pairs, you are going to be given a stanza. You have to imagine you are that person and you are trying to tell someone how you feel in that stanza. Describe in detail in one paragraph what you are trying to say. Be prepared to read it out. EG. Stanza 1: I used to be a clever girl, apparently. I just don’t remember! I was someone’s daughter, her only daughter. And I was someone’s wife. I was someone. Now, I am just no one. People remember me, but I don’t remember them. Who am I if I don’t know anyone?

  7. Now... • Add another comment to your whiteboard about the themes and ideas within the poem.

  8. Past vs. Present Identity Themes • You must include: • 3 quotations for each theme. • A brief explanation of what this theme means and why it is included. Suffering and loss

  9. Now, add one more comment to your whiteboard and swap it with your partner.

  10. What grade are they at? • Have they made at least one general comment about themes and ideas, relating to the text. (E) • Have they shown a more detailed awareness of themes and ideas and been able to make more detailed comments on them, using quotations. (D) • Have they been able to make sustained and detailed comments on themes and ideas, using precise quotations. (C)

  11. Peer Assessment

  12. Homework • Due Friday • Do you think that the first line of the poem is important? Why? • How does Alison show us that her injury is a part of who she is? • Why do you think that she talks about herself as if she is a different person?
