  1. Windows Vista and Microsoft Office 2007 with the Vista OPKOPK Mark O’Shea | OEM System Engineering | Microsoft

  2. Agenda • What is the OPK? • Introduce the Vista OPK and its benefits • Demo of Vista OPK • How to choose the right OPK scenario for your business • Summary and recommendations

  3. What is the Windows OPK? • “OEM Preinstallation Kit”: tools and documentation for automatically preinstalling Windows on new PCs • “Preinstalling”: installing Windows to new PCs with customizations, such as branding, applications, updates, and drivers • OPK CD included with all Microsoft operating systems sold through distribution (except one packs) • Available for download at oem.microsoft.com/getopk

  4. Why should I use the OPK? • How do you build PCs? By hand? • How long does it take you to build a PC? How much does that time cost you? • Are your PCs branded with your logo and support information? • Do you install Office, other applications, drivers, and Windows updates? By hand? • What’s the first-run experience for your customers? Windows Welcome? Or the desktop? Because the OPK saves you time, and time is money!

  5. Business value of the OPK • By hand, it can take 2-3 hours to build a PC • Running Setup, manually adding branding, Office, applications, drivers, Windows updates • With the Vista OPK, it takes as little as 10 minutes to build a branded and resealed PC • Make more money by decreasing production costs with the OPK • System builders that use our full stack of tools today report lower costs, higher margins, more profits and faster delivery times

  6. Introduction to the Vista OPK • Best OPK yet! • Faster, more complete, and more powerful than older OPKs • New imaging technology: Windows imaging • Vista ships as an image • Setup is image-based • ImageX: the new MS imaging tool • Full stack of deployment tools • For all system builders, small to large, network or none • Lots more branding opportunities in Vista • To differentiate, lower costs, and generate revenue • Windows Recovery Environment (Windows RE) • Windows Deployment Services (the new RIS) finally in the OPK • Can also be used with XP and Server • Use WDS to manage the XP/Server/Vista transition

  7. What’s Changed in the Vista OPK?

  8. Vista +Office OPK: The Quick Install • Makes it easy to meet the minimum OEM SB license requirements • Add your support information • Run the Sysprep tool to reseal the PC • Use Vista OPK to Create Autounattend.xml on removable media • Install OfficeReady image • Use Sysprep to Generalise UI and shutdown PC • Optional – image system

  9. Imaging in Windows Vista • The fastest way to preinstall Windows • “Image”: a snapshot of data from a partition on a hard drive • Any data, from the full OS to a single file • New format: .wim file • ImageX creates WIM files • Vista is an image: Install.wim on the DVD • Setup applies Install.wim to the hard drive • WIM files contain one or more images • All Vista SKUs are in Install.wim • ImageX supports XP and Windows Server

  10. ImageX command line samples • To Capture • E:\imagex /compress fast /capture c: d:\sbcimage.wim "Vista Ultimate" • To Apply • E:\imagex /apply d:\sbcimage.wim c:

  11. New Vista OPK Tools: the stack

  12. Benefits to System Builders • More branding opportunities with new OEM Extensibility options • Add your brands, logos, and offers to more of Windows • Lower costs with better image management • WIM images can be edited offline, booted from CD or from over the network, and used to store multiple SKUs in one image. Languages, service packs and updates can be automatically added to images. Fewer images needed. • Save time with more automation • Image Manager automates the addition of drivers, hotfixes, and applications to configuration sets or live preinstallations. Package Manager adds drivers and updates to offline images. • Save time with better answer file management • Unattend.txt, Sysprep.inf, Winbom.ini, and Oeminfo.ini are replaced by Unattend.xml. Setup Manager is replaced by Image Manager, the Unattend.xml authoring tool which finally exposes all Unattend.xml settings • Save time with better driver management • Drivers stored in repository for easy automated installs. F6 now supports all removable media. Drivers (even boot MSD) can be added to offline images with a new tool called Drvload. • More flexible CD/DVD-based installs • OS bits and config sets can be “published” by Image Manager to a portable and self-contained file set that can be stored on CD/DVD/USB for preinstallation via replaceable media. • Fast preinstalls with the new Sysprep • Sysprep has been rearchitected and simplified for Vista. It ships with Vista in the \system32 dir. Makes it easier to build a branded, license-compliant PC.

  13. New Branding Opportunities • Not just Windows Welcome any more:
