  1. Floor Robots An inter-active activity

  2. Lessons Integrated • Mathematics – Length, estimates, measures, recording lengths – meters, millimetres, centimetres. • For example: estimating the number of steps the Bee-Bot needs to take to cover various distances we would like him to travel • Language - use locational and directional prepositions. Prepositional phrases: phrase of position/location e.g. from, to, through, along. Directional phrases e.g. go forward • ICT – programming the Bot • Geography - Use with maps of localities being studied • Art – drawing/building a map and places the Bee- Bot can visit

  3. Bee-Bots • Award winning programmable • simple and child friendly layout is a perfect starting point for teaching control, directional language and programming to young children. • Robust and small design • Clear and bright buttons • Memory of up to 40 steps • Clear and bright buttons • No confusing degrees to program • Sounds and flashing eyes confirm your instructions • Fantastic cross-curricular resources also available • Moves accurately in 15cm steps at a time and turns in 90°

  4. Tasks • Tasks: • Introducing the Bee-Bot • Discuss distances, how fast they think it will go, how far each move is etc. • Use of trial and error • Play a game so they get used to using the bee bots – a race, who gets over the line first, maybe use a dice with the numbers equalling the moves they are allowed to make. • Make a grid map in groups of an area they chose, linked to ones they are studying e.g. local village, or another country, • Draw pictures, make models of places he can visit to place on the map. • Do a practice route - write directions, is there more interesting route? Or a shorter route? • Plan journeys: a short sequence of commands for the Bee-Bot - is there any other routes who could take, shorter? • Recount what they have done – helps development of prepositional language – make a word bank

  5. Shorter tasks involving ict • http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/typing/index.shtml?scope=global&survey=no&surveyname=2009q3&site=dancemattyping&url=http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/typing/index.shtml&js=yes&uid=841b6853bce504b9e43b2f984149c429533f92e1c0d001a4e42fe4d6e34a59ea • Good as a fun way for developing typing skills at different levels • Skills based • http://www.christianaid.org.uk/resources/games/ • Child friendly way to understand other cultures and the world, • Understanding of Christianity in the wider world – what they do in other countries etc. • Help develop discussions with one other person and the whole class, • Recognise choices they can make and how they effect others, • Realise that people and other living things have needs, and that they have responsibilities to meet them. • Re, PHSE, Citizenship
