  2. Describe What's Going On Here… Can you spot 5 different aspects occurring in this picture?

  3. This painting (circa 1872) by John Gast called American Progress, is an allegorical representation of the modernization of the new west. Here Columbia, a personification of the United States, leads civilization westward with American settlers, stringing telegraph wire as she sweeps west; she holds a school book. The different stages of economic activity of the pioneers are highlighted and, especially, the changing forms of transportation. Native Americans and animals flee in terror.

Creating a short answer skeleton/outline for test. • 5. Wrap Up: Explain • Warm Up # 2 • What were some reasons against America expanding and acquiring Texas? • Homework: • Choose a Chapter 9, Section 2 Objective and Create a short answer Essay Skeleton

  6. Short Answer Test Essay Skeleton Choose a Chapter 9 Section 2 Objective! (There are 3 to choose from) Write down all the important individuals, and terms that this objective consists of and describe the importance of these individuals and terms with regards to the objective you chose. Create an outline (MIND MAPS WORK GREAT HERE!): Introduction – List objective and how it related to the concept of the overall theme (Manifest Destiny) Give the reader a brief introduction (no more than 3-4 sentences). Body 1 – (Possible Mind Map Bubble 1) Body 2 – (Possible Mind Map Bubble 2) Body 3 – (Possible Mind Map Bubble 3) Conclusion (wrap up everything stated previously in a different manner) Ultimately what do you want the reader to leave knowing)? Make sure you connect the end result to the overall arching theme – MANIFEST DESTINY!

  10. Chapter 9 Section 2 Answers Stephen F. Austin – led American emigrants to settle east of San Antonio, founding the town of Austin. - Sought economic opportunities of farm land to raise pigs, corn, crops, and cotton. Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna – Ruthless General who favored a centralized, authoritarian government dominated by Military. Responsible for killing Davie Crockett, Jim bowie, and those that were at the Alamo Autonomy – Independent Control Lone Star Republic – Texas’s nickname because their flag had 1 star on it. Possibly because they were considered an independent nation in between Mexico & America! Alamo – a Texas Garrison (supply)where Texan settlers held a resistance in hopes of claiming Texas independence. Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna crushed this rebelling, slaughtering/executing all survivors. Sam Houston – Responsible for capturing Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna and getting him to sign treaty recognizing Texas Independence. Mexico City refused to honor this treaty. James K. Polk – Winner of 1844 Election. Won election by promising Texas & Oregon to Americans. Strong believer in Manifest Destiny. Many Whig Party members did not like him, along with northerners but feared showing opposition due to what happened with the Federalist Party during War of 1812! Zachary Taylor – A General at the time who led American forces deep into Mexico during Spanish American War. Captures Monterrey, Mexico. Winfield Scott – a general that with the help of junior officers (Grant, Sherman, and Lee) Captures Port City Veracruz.

  11. Chapter 9, Section 2 Short Answers What issues led Anglo-Texans and Tejanos to seek independence from Mexico A) Mexico allows Americans to settle . B) In turn for land grants, Americans had to 1) become Mexican citizens, 2) accept Mexican constitution, and3) Worship Roman Catholicism (Mexico’s reasoning was turn a threat into an economical asset) C) Settlers do not honor the 3 reasons listed above. (Remain protestant and ignore slavery ban, and felt Mexican government was unstable – too many military coups) D) Once Santa Anna became President /Dictator of Mexico settlers felt he would free slaves, and make slaves of the settlers! 2. What compromise did the US and Britain Reach regarding the Oregon Trail? a) Split up the land in half. Britain would obtain top half! 49th Parallel b) Polk felt it was easy to wage war against Mexico, rather than Britain all at once. Made a deal! c) This upset northern states, who feared Polk was in complete favor of Southern state rule! 3. What advantages did the United States have in the Mexican American War? a) Economically, militarily weak from war with Spain (1821) b) Mexico lacked industry to supply Mexicans with ammunition and weapons (American had this!!) c)America had a larger and better Navy, Military d) Superb Officers (Winfield Scott, Zach Taylor, Junior officers, Lee, Grant, and Sherman)
