Some researchers also believe that the virus inflames the inner ear, leading to hearing loss, tinnitus, & other hearing problems. In some cases, upper respiratory tract problems caused by the virus can also cause ear infections, which can lead to tinnitus & hearing loss in patients.

  1. Vertigo and hearing loss during the COVID-19 pandemic In the course of the past 1 year since the COVID-19 pandemic first broke, researchers have uncovered a lot of research. One such research establishes a link between the virus that causes the disease & hearing loss in some patients. In a paper published in the International Journal of Audiology, researchers highlight this link between the virus & hearing loss. The paper, written by researchers from the University of Manchester, U.K., highlights the hearing issues of 28 patients with COVID-19.  On compiling research from 24 such papers, certain interesting points came up. Around 14.8 % of COVID-19 patients experienced tinnitus, 7.6% experienced hearing loss, & about 7.2% experienced vertigo. Audiologist Kevin Munro, one of the researchers that worked on the paper, highlights the connection between COVID-19 & hearing problems like hearing loss & tinnitus. According to him, it is possible for the virus to attack & damage the auditory system. That coupled with the mental & emotional stress of the pandemic, can all be a big trigger for the auditory symptoms.

  2. Some researchers also believe that the virus inflames the inner ear, leading to hearing loss, tinnitus, & other hearing problems. In some cases, upper respiratory tract problems caused by the virus can also cause ear infections, which can lead to tinnitus & hearing loss in patients. Another important factor is that hearing loss & tinnitus can occur during the COVID-19 infection, or as an after-effect of it. In some viruses like Meningitis, sudden hearing loss is reported among patients, the kind of which has also been seen in some COVID-19 patients. It’s important to note that most cases of hearing loss & tinnitus caused by COVID-19 will eventually resolve on their own, without the need for any particular medical intervention.  This happens as the viral load in the body decreases over time.  However, if the hearing loss & tinnitus persists for a long time after the resolution of COVID-19 symptoms, you should seek out treatment.  Especially if it is debilitating enough to interfere with your everyday activities.
