What is Voice over IP (VoIP)? • Voice Calls are transmitted over Packet Switched Networks (PSN) instead of Public Switched Telephone Networks (PSTN) • VoIP isn’t a protocol, but a collection of protocols and devices for encoding, transmission and routing of audio calls over a PSN • VoIP is implemented in a variety of applications (e.g. internet calls, VoIP trunking, IP telephony) What is IP Telephony? • Telco grade local service with last mile delivery, complete phone services (Class 5), and high reliability/availability of service • Serves the entire customers range: Residential, SOHO, SMB, Enterprise • Replaces the traditional POTS services
