  2. In the 1300’s Marco Polo was a very important explorer. Marco Polo wrote books about spices that made people in Europe want to trade goods with other countries.

  3. Africa was the first place European explorers visited. In the early 1400’s explorers that were from Portugal sailed down Africa’s west cost to bring products to their mother countries.

  4. Christopher Columbus thought that if he sailed west he would get to India and China faster than the other explorers. Christopher Columbus reached land that he thought was China but it was the Bahamas.

  5. The year after 1497 King Henry sent an explorer named John Cabot. John Cabot explored with a fleet of five ships.

  6. Spain claimed a place in the New World to start a colony. Christopher Columbus left men on Hispaniola, an island, and when Columbus came back his men were killed.

  7. Long ago there were two types of robbers. One of them are privateers and they were hired from the Queen and King. Another one is the pirates they are thieves who stole on there own.

  8. When Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo was young, he helped the Spanish military so he could explore the New World. Juan Rodriguez settled in Guatemala and built ships for transporting goods.

  9. France began to explore North America when King Francis the 1st sent Jacques Cartier. The year was 1535, forty- three years after Columbus discovered America.

  10. In 1540 Francisco Vasquez de Coronado took three hundred Spanish men and eight hundred American Indians with him to explore what is now Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma, and Kansas.
