  3. About this course The course will discuss simple statistical methods and basic concepts of probability theory. The topics of the course are • Sampling and experimental design. • Descriptive statistics and representing data using graphs. • Correlation Linear regression models. • Probability theory • An introduction to statistical inference • confidence intervals and • hypothesis testing. We will use Microsoft Excel for graphing and calculations Other statistical packages will be discussed.

  5. Materials: • You must bring a pencil, notebook paper, and the textbook to each class session. • Calculator recommended for this course: TI-83 Plus, TI-84 Plus. Please bring the following items to every class session: • 1) A pencil or pen • 2) Your math notebook • 3) Your textbook • 4) An assignment book to record when homework is due • 5) Your Calculator.

YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR REGULARLY CHECKING THE CLASS WEBSITE FOR COURSE MATERIAL, INCLUDING ASSIGNMENTS!

  8. Grading • Regular unannounced quizzes about the topics in the homework assignments. (These will be given frequently and cannot be made up, even if you call in to say you will miss class.) • 3 tests. • Final Exam

  9. Grading (continued) Grades are based on the following scheme: Total: 600 points

  10. Grading (continued) Grading scale: A “Curve" is not used in this class.

  11. Policy for Quizzes and Tests: • Quizzes: We will be having short (10-20-min) quizzes every week. These quizzes are not announced in advance. There is absolutely no make-up for the weekly quizzes. • Tests and Final: There will be a total of 3 tests during the semester and a cumulative final exam.

  12. Making-up tests: • You can reschedule a test for a different time or day ONLY if you make arrangements with me in advance and only if you have a valid reason for the change. In such a situation, you take the test up to two days before or after the date scheduled for all students. • The final exam will be given once and only once in class. You may take it early if you inform me in advance and you have a valid reason for changing your exam date.

  13. Homework Assignment rules • Homework will be due regularly. Please note that each homework assignment will be recorded as submitted but will not be graded. There will be regular in-class short quizzes with questions from the topics on the homework. • Late homework will not be recorded as submitted. • A copy of the homework schedule will be handed out to you as well as updated on Blackboard. Please complete these assignments as indicated. We will review the previously assigned homework questions at the beginning of the next class period if you feel that a problem or problems need further examination.

  14. The following rules apply to homework submission: • 1) You must be present in class to turn in your homework. • 2) You cannot have your friend turn in your homework and skip class. • 3) I will not count homework placed in my mailbox or under my office door. • 4) You must show the work you did to solve each problem in order for your homework to be counted.

  15. Class time • Attendance Plan on attending to do well in this course. (Keep your 10 pts intact!) • Since you’re here - participate! • Attendance and class participation are decisive factors in determining course grades for borderline cases.
