Junior was born on the reservation… • Survived life threatening brain surgery at 6 mos. • He had ten more teeth than a regular person • He wore glasses at 3 years of age • He was skinny, but his hands and feet were huge! • He had a big head What does this mean for someone born on the reservation?????

  3. It means you get beat up by EVERYONE!

  4. Life on the Reservation isn’t easy… • They are REALLY poor! • Dreams are not realized • Serious alcohol issues • His Geometry book was also used by his mother! • Death is a frequent occurrence

  5. Junior has the opportunity to leave… Wellpinit Reardon • Poor • On the reservation • Lack of teaching materials • No hope • Rich/White • Farm town • Lots of resources and big gymnasiums • Hope

  6. A few thoughts • Have you ever felt as though you were destined for something greater? • What do we notice about our own school? • This book is semi-autobiographical. • Wellpinit HS today-opportunities exist! They have AVID!

Timeline for the Project • December 15th-Book talk introduction with AVID 12 • December 15th-January 3rd-AVID 12 students read the novel • Week of January 3rd-AVID students advertise the book schoolwide • January 3rd-February 15nd-All students and faculty are invited to check out a copy in the media center and read the story. • February 23rd-Book Talk and Pizza Party in the Media Center (2:00-3:30)
