  4. II. Roosevelt Big Stick Policy A. The United States will use its military to promote its interests- words will be backed up by strong action. “Speak softly and carry a big stick.” B. The United States had the right to intervene in Latin America .

  5. Relations with Latin America I. Roosevelt and the Panama Canal A. Why did we want it? 1. greatly benefit American commerce and military capability. 2. shorten trip from New York to San Francisco nearly 8,000 miles.

  6. B. How did we get it? 1. “Big Stick Policy”- When Colombia wouldn’t let the U.S. buy the land for the Panama Canal, Roosevelt sent down a battleship to support a Panama revolution. Panama became independent and agreed to let the U.S. build a canal.

  7. C. What were the Difficulties in Construction A. Mosquitoes carried malaria and yellow fever- but were exterminated by Dr. Gorgas B. 40,000 workers struggled to dig the canal
