What do the children think of her? • Compare and contrast what Miss Maudie tells the children about Boo with their preconceived notions. • Why does Dill tell “stories”? • Why does Atticus not want the children to play the Boo Radley game?

  3. Chapter Six Questions • Why does Scout disapprove of Jem and Dill’s plan to look in the Radley windows? • What does Nathan Radley know about the intruders in the garden? • Why does Miss Stephanie refer to a “negro” over whose head Mr. Radley has fired? • Why does Dill’s explanation of Jem’s state of dress almost land him in trouble?

  4. Chapter Seven Questions • When Jem gets his trousers back, what is strange? • How is Jem more understanding of Boo Radley than Scout? • Does Jem fear the gifts in the tree? Why or why not? • Why are the children prevented from sending a letter to the person who leaves the gifts? Who do you think this person is?

  5. Chapter Eight Questions • Why does Scout quiz Atticus about his visit to the Radley house? How much does Atticus tell her? • What is the “near libel” that Jem puts in the front yard? How do Maudie and Atticus react to it? • Why does Atticus save Miss Maudie’s oak rocker? • What does Jem realize about the blanket around Scout? • What does Atticus mean when he tells Jem not to allow his discovery to inspire him to further glory?

  6. Quotations • 1. “ You are too young to understand it, but sometimes the Bible in the hand of one man is worse than a whiskey bottle in the hand of --oh, of your father.” • 2. “ See what you’ve done? Hasn’t snowed in Maycomb since Appomattox. It’s bad children like you makes the seasons change.” • 3. “ Son, I can’t tell what you’re going to be--an engineer, a lawyer, or a portrait painter. You’ve perpetrated a near libel here in the front yard. We’ve got to disguise this fellow.” • 4. “ Scout, I’m tellin’ you for the last time, shut your trap or go home--I declare to the Lord you’re getting’ more like a girl every day!”

  7. The Novel as a genre • Genre, when applied to literature, means type or format. There are several literary genres: short story, poetry, drama, and of course, the novel. • The word novel means “NEW”. When novels began, it was the newest literary genre. Short stories are newer forms. • The novel is a long narrative in prose.

  8. The Novel as a genre • Predecessors of the novel include PICARESQUES, which were loosely connected narrative adventure stories • Examples of PICARESQUES include Chaucer’s “The Canterbury Tales” and Cervantes’ “Don Quixote”. • To Kill a Mockingbird is a BILDUNGSROMAN, a story wherein a young person matures.
