  2. Introduction • What are refugees? • What makes them different from migrants? • How many refugees are their world wide?

  3. How their experiences affect their education • Trauma and dislocation - Psychological and behavioural problems (Strekalova & Hoot,2008). - Interrupted schooling– unfamiliar classrooms (Dooley,2009; Oliver, Haig & Grote,2009; Brown, J; Miller & Mitchell, 2005).

  4. Language Barrier • Learning a new language (Dooley,2009). • Simulation activity: Classroom exercise/ discussion.

Difficulties Teachers face teaching refugee students in the classroom • Communication - - Students listening-comprehension is low (Strekalova & Hoot 2009). - Speaking directly to teachers in certain cultures may be seen as being impolite. • Differing Levels - Teachers will always have a varying mix of students with different learning capabilities.

Continued on… • Learning pace - A refugee students learning pace is slower mainly due to the language barrier. - Students learn differently in their home country (Dooley, 2009). • Classroom Management - Refugee students will bring a variety of behaviors' to the classroom. • Physical Interaction - Different customs regarding physical interaction in different cultures.
