  1. Overview of the Problem Childhood Obesity in the Philippines

  2. Global Perspective on Childhood Obesity

  3. Definition of Childhood obesity • Overweight: BMI between 85th and 95th percentile • Obese: BMI above the 95th percentile • Waist-to-hip ratio:

  4. Obesity Throughout the World

  5. Causes of Obesity • Overeating • Insufficient vitamins and nutrients • Too much fast/junk food • Insufficient levels of physical activity 1 billion people are hungry and 1 billion people (worldwide) are obese…is there a relationship? http://www.ted.com/talks/ellen_gustafson_obesity_hunger_1_global_food_issue.html YES!

  6. Where in the world…?

  7. A closer look

  8. Obesity in the Philippines • 1 in 5 Filipinos are overweight • 1 in 20 are obese • 26.6% of Filipinos were overweight in 2008 compared to 16.6% in 1993 • Heart disease is the leading cause of death among Filipinos (1 out of 5 deaths) • There are 2X more obese females than males in the Philippines • By 2015, prevalence of overweight Filipinos is expected to increase by 24% for men and 44% for women • 12/100 Filipinos are chronic energy deficient • 25.3% of Filipinos have a prevalence of hypertension • Find these facts and many more at http://www.ndap.org.ph/files/upload/7th-National%20Nutrition%20Survey.pdf

  9. Cultural Aspects • Common greeting: “Have you eaten yet?” • Many celebrations throughout the year contribute to major food intake • No need of an excuse to celebrate • Common to eat 6 meals a day • More food available=more “love” you have to offer

  10. Historical Aspects • Many Filipinos used to be starving  greater appreciation for food  indulging their children when junk food became cheaper and more readily available  overweight/obese children • Older generation Filipinos find heavy children cute and healthy

  11. Environmental Aspects Location makes it prone to natural disasters + Very hot, humid and tropical + 2.8 million people exposed to toxic pollution = People spending more time sitting down indoors and less time being active outside

  12. Economic Aspects • Public health programs are only 0.10% of the whole government budget • They wouldn’t need to increase their allotted healthcare budget by much to make a significant impact http://www.doh.gov.ph/sites/default/files/DOH%20budget%202012.pdf

  13. Political Aspects • President issued a statement regarding the issue • Noted the rise in overweight and obese Filipinos • The main people affected were the working and middle class  resulting in decreased productivity and less economic growth. • Focus for campaigning against obesity must be redirected to the children, rather than primarily adults. • The support to accomplish the desired task of reducing obesity must be recruited from not only the awareness campaign, but the health professionals as well. • PASOO believes the difference can be made in the Filipino lifestyle through education, research, and networking. http://www.obesity.org.ph/?p=article1-message Want to see what the President exactly said?

  14. MOVE • Program that will provide weekly one hour long nutritional classes for students ages 4-18 • Support is provided by the government, the Cohen program, and the Oh My Gulay program • Supporters will work with the government to set new nutritional standards for McDonald’s and Jollibee (and eventually other fast food restaurants) What is Cohen’s? http://www.cohenlifestyle.com.ph/

  15. Goal 1 and objectives • Increase awareness of the dangers of fast food and a sedentary lifestyle via education, billboards, and governmental programs • By 2015, all students will attend a weekly one hour long nutritional education classes at school provided for by the MOVE program • By 2020, 60% of graduating seniors will score a 75% or higher on a cumulative nutrition exam based on the classes they took through the MOVE program. • With the education, we hope that obesity-related diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, etc will be decreased.

  16. Goal 2 and objectives • Set new nutritional standards for McDonald’s and Jollibee • By 2015, McDonald’s and Jollibee will decrease their fat content by 15% according to new governmental regulations • By 2015, all McDonald’s and Jollibee’s will have bike-only drive thru’s. Read this blog about how the government is finally starting to get involved! http://www.philstar.com/health-and-family/728502/how-big-problem-childhood-obesity

  17. Conclusion With the development of MOVE, we hope to decrease the prevalence of obesity in the Philippines, and upon success, try our program in other countries
