  1. NE Sandy Blvd NE 80th Ave to NE 97th Ave By: AdellaWarjri Jonathan Hangartner Andrew Wilkes Kaylin McDaniel

  2. Corridor Analysis -NE 80th Ave. to NE 97th Ave. • Existing Conditions - Site geometry, land use, nearby businesses, bus stops • Crash Data - Type and number of collisions • Countermeasures - What can be done

  3. NE 82nd Ave. Existing Conditions • Surrounding land use is mostly residential • Sandy Blvd. 35 mph, NE 82nd Ave. 35 mph • Painted Crosswalks (all four legs) • No Right-Turn Lanes on Sandy Blvd.

  4. NE 82nd Ave. Crash Data • Rear-End (43%) and Turning (32%) Crashes Most Common • Rear-End: Drivers following too closely • Turning: Failure of motorists to yield • Because there were no crashes involving pedestrians and only one crash involving a bicyclist it can be assumed that the vulnerable road users are receiving sufficient protection

  5. NE 82nd Ave. Countermeasures Turning/Angle: Install red light cameras to deter RAG disregard Rear End: Install “queue ahead” warning signs

  6. NE 88th Ave. Existing Conditions • Minor stop-controlled Intersection • No painted crosswalks • No bike lanes • Immediate land use is commercial • NE 88th is low volume local (one segment is an alley) • 35 MPH on Sandy, 25 MPH on 88th

  7. NE 88th Ave. Crash Data • Only 6 crashes in approx. 4 years • Most common crash type was rear-end (50%) • Cause: drivers following too close Statistically Significant Data • Non-resident drivers overrepresented • Improper parking overrepresented (only 1 occurrence)

  8. NE 88th Ave. Crash Analysis • Intersection did not exceed HSM expected crashes • No need to invest specifically in this intersection for vehicular traffic • Improvements could be made to increase ped/bike safety Suggested Improvements • Consider adding marked crosswalks w/ median island • Consider adding bike lanes (which would eliminate parallel parking, but it looks like most businesses have dedicated parking lots)

  9. NE Prescott Street Existing Conditions • 4 signalized intersection with ADT of 23,600 (2005/2006 data) • Located in a residential area • Three bus stops nearby increasing pedestrian exposure • Two bars located within 500ft of the intersection

  10. NE Prescott Street Crash Data • 12 crashes • 6 angle, 4 turn, 2 rear • No pedestrian or cyclist involved • No fatalities • 7 out of 12 crashes during wet conditions

  11. NE Prescott Street Countermeasures • Install controlled left turn signal to reduce turn and angle collisions • Repaving the road to increase friction as most crashes occurred during wet conditions • Reducing the number of bus stops around the intersection might reduce rear collisions • Improve intersection lighting to reduce pedestrian conflicts

  12. NE 91st Ave. Existing Conditions • Bus stop (location shown on map) • NE 91st is a residential street • NE Sandy has small houses and small businesses

  13. NE 91st Ave. Existing Conditions • NE 91st is 25 mph • NE Sandy Blvd is 35 mph • No painted crosswalks • No turn lanes on NE Sandy Blvd

  14. NE 91st Ave. Crash Data • 5 out of 7 accidents were rear-end collisions on NE Sandy Blvd • Drivers tend to follow too closely • There was one pedestrian fatality • Driver did not see pedestrian crossing NE Sandy Blvd

  15. NE 91st Ave. Countermeasures • To reduce rear-end accidents, add a turn lane • To reduce pedestrian accidents, add a cross walk by the bus stop And add flashing yellow light Oradd a median down the middle of Sandy Blvd so that pedestrians will not try to cross there

  16. NB Exit Sandy Blvd/NE 96th/ NE 97th Existing Conditions • NE 96th and Sandy is a four legged signalized intersection • NE 97th and Sandy is a three legged unsignalized intersection • Surrounding businesses include Econo Lodge, Roadway Inn, Glass House Tavern

  17. NB Exit Sandy Blvd/NE 96th/NE 97th Existing Conditions • Residential apartments nearby • Bus stop located close to the intersection • The motels are likely to generate unfamiliar drivers

  18. NB Exit Sandy Blvd/NE 96th/ NE 97th Crash Data • 36 total crashes at off ramp merge & 2 proceeding intersections • Rear end, turning, and SS-O most common • 1 fatality /inj.A at 97th intersection • Non-resident drivers very overrepresented (proximity to airport?)

  19. NB Exit Sandy Blvd/NE 96th/ NE 97th Countermeasures • I-205 NB Exit: Extend merging lane • 96th Ave: Improve warning signage for upcoming signal • 97thAve: Add center median to discourage pedestrian crossing and eliminate vehicle left turns onto Sandy

  20. Sandy Corridor: NE 80th Ave to NE 97th AveProblem Locations & Recommended Treatments • NE 82nd Ave • High Crash Location • Add red light camera to mitigate RAG disregard and turning crashes • Improve warning signage alerting drivers to queues ahead • NE Prescott St • High proportions of turning & angle collisions • Add left turn lanes on Sandy & protected left turn signal on Prescott • Improve intersection lighting to allow drivers to see pedestrians at night • NE 96th Ave/NE 97th Ave • High incidence of rear end crashes, turning, and sideswipe-overtaking • Improve warning signage preparing drivers to stop and improve way finding signage to reduce last minute lane changes • Add a center median to reduce turning collisions and discourage pedestrians from crossing outside of crosswalks • I-205 NB Exit • Issues with merging exist • Improve signage alerting drivers on Sandy of merging vehicles • Lengthen merging lane to reduce conflicts Image: Google Maps
