  1. Description: Learners conduct simple experiments to find out what makes “mystery beads” change color outdoors. They discover that invisible rays of UV (ultraviolet) light cause the beads to change color. After discussing the harmful effects of too much sun on their skin, learners test the effectiveness of sunscreen on UV beads and then illustrate a sun safety poster. Books: Sunshine On My Shoulders! Sunshine on My Shoulders!

  2. Engage • Create a mystery bead bracelet by stringing five beads on a chenille stem. • Place the bracelet on your wrist and complete #1 on your Mystery Bead Student Sheet • When everyone at your table has completed this task, place the green/red cup so that the green cup is facing up. • Field trip • Quickly complete #2 on your Mystery Bead Student Sheet • When everyone at your table has completed this task, place the green/red cup so that the green cup is facing up. • Brainstorm – What made the beads change?

  3. Explore Each group will be responsible for testing to determine what made the bead change color • Heat • Cold • Water • Wind • Light

  4. Explain Using the whiteboard provided, explain how you tested the beads and what you can conclude from the evidence you gathered.

  5. Elaborate • So far, we’ve learned that the sun can cause our mystery beads to change color. • What are some good things about the sunshine? • What are some harmful things about the sunshine? • Have you ever had a sunburn? • What are some ways to protect your skin and eyes from sunshine?

Elaborate • What do you think would happen if we put sunscreen on the mystery beads? • Apply sunscreen to your beads and take them outside for testing. • How does the color of the beads with sunscreen compare to the beads without sunscreen?? • Why do you think they look different? • Do you think the sunscreen blocks all the UV light from the sun?

  10. Evaluate • Please complete the Sun Safety Tip Student Sheet. • Complete the sentence stem: When you are in the Sun, wear _________. It helps block UV light. • In the square provided, illustrate how your object/article blocks the sun.

  11. Accessing the Internet • Locate the Safari button at the bottom of the screen and tap lightly. • Select a Wi-Fi Network. • Log in to the Network. • If you cannot see the screen, place two fingers on the screen and spread them apart. • If you have any problems ask your shoulder partner or the instructor for help.

  12. Accessing Videos • Select the you tube icon. • Using the search function, type in “sunshine on my shoulders”. • Select the video from catbrush123 with a picture of the sun reflecting off water.
