  1. Ladies and Gentleman, the Tape Diagram.

  2. Diagram used to compare ratios when the ratios have the same units of measurement. • Uses rectangles to visually display ratios. • Ratio: A comparison of two quantities or numbers

  3. 4:3 • To make purple paint you need 4 parts red and 3 parts blue. 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 7 total pieces The whole diagram (Blue and Red combined) equals 7 gallons of paint. Each square is equal to one gallon of paint. How I found the value of each box: Total Quantity ÷ Total Number of Pieces.

  4. Whoa Mr. Compton, you did what?? • 1. Write the ratio of the problem you are dealing with in any of the three forms. (I prefer the : ) • 2. Draw your ratio using the “squares” or “whole” pieces • 3. Count the total number of pieces in your tape diagram • 4. Total quantity ÷ Total number of pieces • 5. Use quotient to fill in each square • 6. Add or multiply to find total number of each item.

  5. Using our same ratio 4:3 • Suppose you want to make 84 gallons of purple paint, how much of each color will you need? 12 4:3 12 7 Total Pieces Check Yo Self: 84 Total Gallons 48 + 36 = 84 84 = 84 ✔ 84 ÷ 7 = 12 Red Paint = 12 x 4 = 48 Gallons Blue Paint = 12 x 3 = 36 Gallons

  6. Trail Mix! • Trail mix has a ratio of 8 chocolate chips to 5 nuts. How much of each do you need if you want 260 pieces of trail mix?

  7. Try these on your own! I believe in you  • The ratio of green M & M’s to Blue M & M’s is 6 : 5. IF one Seahawks themed Costco size bag contains 2700 delicious M & M’s of only these two colors, how many of each color will there be? • The ratio of girls to boys in a a college class is 4 : 5. If there are 486 students in the classroom, how many fewer girls are there than boys?

  8. Ticket to Recess • 1. Summarize the TAPE DIAGRAM in your own words. • 2. Solve the following problem, using a tape diagram: The ratio of Bison to Students at CIMI is 1:7. If there are 208 entities (Bison and Students) at CIMI, how many of each species are there?
