Basic Info cont. • Purpose: To determine the clients ability to demonstrate the basic skills necessary to hike independently. • Assessment Measures: Five Skill levels broken into Focal Points (see later slides) • Supplies needed: Pictures of and actual equipment used to hike. • Reliability: None reported • Who can access: Anyone able to 1. Read 2. Basic knowledge of disability's 3. Moderately strong hiking skills and techniques • Comments:1979 ICAN was used in classroom, no report forms for medical charts, 1990 version specifically for medical charts.

  4. Skill Level 1:Select proper attire for hiking Focal Points • Comfortable pair of high-topped shoes or boots • Thick and thin pair of socks • Comfortable pair of pants • Suitable Shirt • Suitable Rain Gear • Suitable Jacket

  5. Skill Level 2:Mature pacing without assistance Focal Points • Hike with steps that are a consistent distance apart and with an even pace • Focus eyes ahead and frequently at feet for obstacles • Watch for fallen or low-hanging obstacles

  6. Skill Level 3: Uphill and downhill hiking technique Focal Points • Hike uphill with the weight on balls of feet • Maintain a slow, steady pace with rest intervals approximately every five to seven minutes • Hike uphill with weight on the heels and knees bent slightly

  7. Skill Level 4: Moving under obstacles Focal Points • Check for loose braches or rocks before proceeding under obstacles • Check for safety on other side of rocks • Help others behind him/her

  8. Skill Level 5:Moving over obstacles Focal Points • Check for loose branch's or rocks • Check safety on other side of obstacle • Help others behind him/her
