  1. Why we need to develop and share maternal health data across Andhra Pradesh Andy Beckingham FFPH Consultant in Public Health Fernandez Hospital

  2. As the leaders of maternal health improvement in AP: • You need a common database on the incidence of the main problems • Without it, we cannot prioritize action • Nor can we monitor trends • Nor can we take early preventive action…

  3. … and nor: • … can we know which communities at high risk to target • Nor can we avoid INCREASING inequalities • Nor can we tell whether we are making the maternal and neonatal mortality, stillbirth or morbidity rates WORSE over time

  4. Example 1 • What is the AP stillbirth rate? • Does it vary between urban & rural districts? • Who would you target, to reduce it?

  5. Example 2: • A sample study in 2008 said that the AP stillbirth rate was 10 /1000 • Likely?? • Perhaps we should learn from Bihar – • They did not report a single stillbirth in 2008 !

  6. Monitoring incidence over time: • What is the incidence of GDM in AP? • And in your hospital? • Will it increase as obesity rates follow the Western pattern? • Should we act now? • Where would we target action?

  7. Without accurate data on maternal outcomes… • … or on the incidence of key morbidities: • How will we know whether the MMR rate is rising or falling? • Or whether the gap between the affluent and poor women is WIDENING?

  8. Don’t rely on national data • …or on local studies in Bangalore, Orissa or New Delhi… • Because rates vary so widely • So you might inadvertently target populations with lower risk • Examples from another country:

  9. To assist data sharing: • Fernandez Hospital has started a small maternal public health database for AP • We will need you to share data • It will be a public website • We will invite you all to a data planning workshop. • You will be invited to recommend priorities
