The War Moves South • Key ? – What happened when the British shifted the war to the South? • 1778 – British moved the war to the South. • Most Southerners were Loyalists and African Americans would join their fight. • 1778 - the port of Savannah was captured by the British. • 1780 – The Battle of Charles Town – city surrendered after being surrounded.

  3. continued • Congress assigned General Horatio Gates to form a new Southern army led by de Kalb. • Met British general Lord Cornwallis at Camden. • Americans in no condition to fight and fled. • De Kalb received fatal wounds and Gates term as head of army ended. • American spirits low.;

Guerrilla Warfare • Rebel guerrilla leaders – Francis Marion, called the “swamp fox”. • Able to cut the British supply line that led inland from Charles Town. • British found more rebel sympathizers than Loyalists. • Rebel guerrillas attacked British messengers making it difficult for forces moving inland to keep in touch with their bases on the coast.

General Greene Takes Charge • Nathanael Greene replaced Gates in the South. • Americans won victory at Cowpens. • Cornwallis chased them up the coast , but Americans used the landscape to keep one step ahead of the British. • British realized their were more Patriots than Loyalists in the South.

  6. The End of the War • Key ? – How was Cornwallis trapped? • Cornwallis he marched troops north to VA. • Set up base at Yorktown located on a peninsula in Chesapeake Bay so they could receive supplies. • French sent naval fleet to block the bay. • Washington and French army surrounded Yorktown and captured redoubts – small forts. • Cornwallis surrendered on October 19, 1781.
