  13. PROGRESSIVE forms of Verbs (they are going and going and going). 1) Maria was working in the past, she will be working in the future. 2) The opera singer had been singing for some time. 3) By next week he will have been singing for three weeks straight

  14. Analyzing Characters • What does the author say the character looks like? • What do they say? • What do others say about them? • What does the author say about how they feel and act?

  15. Flashbacks • When the author tells us about the history of the story in the middle of the story. • Example: Yolanda recalls the death of her father on page 334 (five pages into the story!).

  16. The Dance Plot Points • Yolanda’s papi is killed while working as a security guard. Now her mother likes a new man, Don Jose. He’s from a mountain town in Puerto Rico. Page 330 • Yolanda thinks Don Jose is a hick, or jibaro. She laughs at his clothes and she doesn’t like his singing or guitar playing. Page 331 • Although Mami seems happier since she met Don Jose, Yolanda worries that Papi will be forgotten. Page 332

  17. The Dance Plot Points • Yolanda refuses to go to the salsa dance with Mami and Don Jose. She thinks things are going a little too fast between Mami and Don Jose. Page 333 • After they leave, she begins to imagine that her mother is in danger. She remembers how helpless her mother was the day Papi was shot. Yolanda had to take charge. Page 334 • In a panic, Yolanda decides to go to the dance to check on her mother. Page 334

  18. The Dance Plot Points • At the dance, Yolanda sees her mother and Don Jose dancing the tango. Mami looks very happy, and Yolanda goes back home alone. Page 335 • She realizes that Don Jose is helping her mother move on with her life. Still, she cannot forget her Papi. Page 335 • When Mami comes home and hugs her,she feels her mother’s happiness. At that moment, Yolanda senses that eventually she will be able to share her happiness and remember Papi. Page 335
