  3. Chinese Invasion • Mao Zedong and Chinese Communists • 1951 – People’s Liberation Army captures Lhasa, Tibet’s capital • 1959 – Tibetans revolt • Thousands of Tibetans have been killed, tortured, and imprisoned

  4. Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR) • Official name given by China • Tibetans are a minority ethnic group • Central Committee of the Communist Party of China • Population – 2,620,000 • Official language is Chinese • 130,000 Tibetans live in exile

  5. Government-in-Exile • Dalai Lama – Political leader • Dharamsala, India • Government- Democratic • Language is Tibetan • Religion is Tibetan Buddhism

  6. What Tibet is doing • 1988 – true autonomy for Tibet • 1989 – 30th anniversary of Lhasa uprising • 1996 – Bombing near Chinese government offices • China is willing to wait until the Dalai Lama dies • Also waiting so the Han Chinese become majority of the population
