Phases, Eclipses, and Tides. THE MOON…. How did the moon form ? The Collision Ring Theory: A planet sized object collided with Earth, sending material out in to space, which formed a ring around Earth. This material eventually cooled, and clumped together to form the moon.

  2. THE MOON…. How did the moon form? • The Collision Ring Theory: A planet sized object collided with Earth, sending material out in to space, which formed a ring around Earth. This material eventually cooled, and clumped together to form the moon.

  3. How does the moon move? • The moon rotates on its axis and revolves around Earth • Both take the same amount of time (27.3 days) so, the same side of the moon always faces Earth

  4. Phases • The moon does not produce its own light, it reflects sunlight. • How much of the side of the moon facing Earth is lit by the sun Earth determines the phase we see. • Waxing phases – more of the side of the moon facing Earth is lit (growing) • Waning phases – less of the side of the moon facing Earth is lit (shrinking)

  5. EclipsesWhen the moon’s shadow hits Earth, or Earth’s shadow hits the moon, an eclipse occurs. It is a total eclipse if the object is in the umbra, and a partial eclipse if the object is in the penumbra. • Solar Eclipse • Occurs during a new moon • Line up: Sun – moon - Earth • Lunar Eclipse • Occurs during a full moon • Line up: Sun – Earth - moon

  6. Tides • Caused primarily by differences in how much the moon’s gravity pulls on different parts of Earth.

  7. Spring and Neap Tides • Caused due to the combined force of the moon and sun’s gravitational pull on Earth. • Spring tides – highest high tides, lowest low tides • new and full moons • Neap tides - lower high tides, higher low tides • 1st and 3rd quarters
