  3. GEAR-Tech-21 is… • A two year program • For middle school youth • Robotics, GPS, and GIS Curriculum • Summer camp programs • Competitions: Fair, Virtual, & FLL • Professional development for adult volunteers

  4. Background • Funded by the National Science Foundation • (Award Number ESI-0624591) • Developed as a regional program • by Nebraska 4-H • 5-year Scale-Up Project • began fall 2008

  6. The GEAR-Tech-21 Experience Camp 1.0: GEAR Explorers 1st year club meeting activities Camp 2.0: In High GEAR 2nd year club meeting activities

  8. Robotics LEGO® MINDSTORMS® NXT Robotics Kits

  9. GPS Global Positioning System Handheld GPS units

  10. GIS Geographic Information Systems ArcGIS software

  11. Precision Agriculture

  12. Curriculum – Year 1 • Build and program a simple robot • Moving and turning • Sensors • Use a GPS Unit to mark waypoints and tracks • Customize a GIS map

  13. Curriculum – Year 2 • Combine GPS and Robotics technologies • Bluetooth • Advanced Mapping • Direct a robot to specific GPS coordinates

  14. Camp Program Requirements • Serve at least 10 youth • Use GT21 curriculum, including robotics, GPS, and GIS • 30 hours recommended curriculum activities, 20 hours minimum • Youth participate in research surveys • Start or continue a GT21 club • Offered by 4-H or in collaboration with 4-H

Camp Equipment & Software • Camps provide own computers & software • Use ArcMap or Google Earth • Apply for ESRI grant for ArcMap or download Google Earth (free) • LEGO NXT-G software • Either access activities online or purchase curriculum CD ($25) • NXT kits ($10) and GPS units ($5) available to rent

Camp Mini-Grants: What you get • Curriculum: online modules and helpers guides • Youth camper notebooks: Must purchase for $5 each • Training: two-day in-person or distance training for camp staff • At least one permanent staff must attend training • Ability to rent NXT kits and GPS units • Up to $75 per participant for Year 1 Camps • Up to $100 per participant for Year 2 Camps

The Money Details • Up to $75 per participant for Year 1 Camps • Up to $100 per participant for Year 2 Camps • Limited to participant costs like: site rental fees, food, program materials, youth notebooks, other consumable supplies, equipment rental • Ineligible expenses: equipment purchase, staff salaries, volunteer costs, adult transportation • Money will be reimbursed AFTER the camp program • Must submit ORIGINAL receipts
