  1. Division of Instruction Updates Board Work Session July 9, 2019 Daniel Boyd

  2. Agenda • Office of School Improvement • MEGA

  3. Where We Are • 2 Regional Support Coordinators split by southern and northern regions of the state • Serve as a liaison between the SDE and the schools/districts and provide 24/7 support as needed • Support is prioritized by schools of greatest need: Comprehensive Schools (61), Additional Targeted Support Schools, Failing Schools, and all others • Approximately 700 hours per month of OSI Face-to-Face Support with Schools (not including travel) Districts with CSI Schools

  4. Nature of Support • Boots on the ground support (not a compliance role) • While support is prioritized because of limited staff, no request is denied • Support is differentiated and multi-faceted, based on need and individual requests • Support and monitoring of improvement plan

Specific CSI School Support (61 Schools) • Help draft and support CSI school Action Plans • These plans addressed the indicators on the School Report Card: Chronic Absence, Student Achievement, English Learners, Graduation Rate, Career Readiness Indicators (Advanced Placement, Dual Enrollment, Career Credentials, etc.) • Instructional Reviews • Transformation Academies • Strategic Support and Training Based on Needs • Ongoing Communication and Support with Superintendents/District Leads

  10. Reflections from Transformation Academies • “Seeing instruction through the students’ eyes was impactful. Many times leaders assume we know what is happening in classrooms, but the student lens provides us with what is actually happening.” --Anthony Oliver, Green Acres MS • “I believe central office participation in the Transformation Academy created a feeling that we are all in this together. Additionally, when we visit schools we truly know exactly what to look for”. --Larry Mouton, Mobile County Public Schools • “It has helped me get more teachers on board and to step up as leaders to assist and to share. This has allowed us to move forward in our improvement plan faster and a lot smoother.” --Reta Hayes, Principal, Lipscomb Elementary • “Principals are more aware of how they spend their time each day, and the reflection has resulted in an increased focus on instruction.” --Phyllis Montalto, Jefferson County
