Cheremisinof,” HANDBOOK OF WATER AND WASTEWATER TREATMENT TECHNOLOGIES”, Butterworth-Heinemann,2002. 3- 1-American water work association (AWWA) ,"Water treatment plant design",4th Edition ,Mc Craw Hill,1990

  6. At the end of this lecture the student will be able to: 1. Identify the different water sources 2. Describe the advantages and disadvantages of groundwater 3. Identify surface water sources 4. Describe the importance of rainwater 5. Describe the disadvantage of ocean water

  7. Lecture # 1SOURCES OF WATER • Groundwater(wells and springs) • Surface Water • Rainwater • Ocean Water

  8. Advantages of groundwater: free from disease causing micro-organism. can be used without further treatment. Disadvantages of groundwater A. It needs pumping unless it comes from a spring B. It may contain excess amounts of dissolved minerals. C. It is poor in oxygen content

  9. Occurrence of groundwater • perched water • free water • confined water. • Compare between the above

  10. Source From where? underground surface

  11. Types of wells • Shallow wells • Deep wells • Artesian wells • Springs Compare between the above

  12. Surface Water includes: rivers, streams, lakes, ponds, etc. • Rainwater :In regions where rainfall is abundant and frequent, rainwater can be a good source of water supply for individual families and for small communities(not in large scale) • Ocean Water r:To make the ocean water fit for these purposes; it must pass through a process known as desalination (a process of removal of salt from water). However, it is too expensive to consider.

  13. Review Questions 1-List the types of ground and surface water sources? 2-What is the advantage and disadvantage of groundwater? 3-What is the significance of rainwater? 4. What is the disadvantage of ocean water?

  14. Testing Water Quality • Water quality parameters • often tested are: • Dissolved oxygen • Water temperature • pH • Total Ammonia Nitrogen • Nitrite/Nitrate • Alkalinity/Hardness • Salinity Water test kit
