  4. If you have 9 dogs sharing 50 pounds of dog food, you should ask, “How many times will 9 fit into 50? 9 ×5 = 45 • 9 × 6 = 54 50 ÷ 9 = ?

  5. Between what two numbers does the answer lie? It is between 5 and 6. Each dog will get 5 pounds of food. How many pounds are left over? 9×5=45 50-45=5

  6. Now divide the remaining 5 pounds of food among the 9 dogs. 5 ÷ 9 =

  7. The quotient is a mixed number, so each dog will receive 5 pounds plus of the remaining 5 pounds of dog food. 50 ÷ 9 = 5
