A LITTLE BIT OF BACKGROUND ON THE BUILDING Now a museum the building is run by the state and the living descendants of William Herndon Lincoln practiced law in the building from 1843 to about 1852. During his 1847-1849 tenure as a United States Congressman, partner William H. Herndon (1818-1891) maintained the practice. In 1978 the building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places as a part of the Central Springfield Historic District.

LINCOLNS THOUGHTS THE DAY BEFORE: ALL THOUGH LINCOLN GOT ALONG GREAT WITH WILLIAM LINCOLNS KIDS SAW HIM THE SAME WAY AS HIS WIFE MARY WHO COULDN’T STAND HIM THE REASON FOR THAT IS “ ONE NIGHT AFTER A FIGHT WITH HIS WIFE WILLIAM WENT TO THE TAVERN FOR A DRINK AFTER HAVING ONE BEER TO MANY HE GOT INTO A BAR FIGHT AND BROKE A WINDOW HE WAS ORDERD TO PAY $50 TO REPLACE IT BUT HE DIDN’T HAVE THE MONEY SO LINCOLN GAVE HIM A LOAN BUT LINCOLN WAS ELECTED TO THE PRESIDENCY BEFORE HE COULD REPAY IT THAT FINAL NIGHT LINCOLN TELLS HIM “ I HOPE WHEN THIS IS ALL OVER I CAN COME BACK AND WE CAN RESUME PRACTING LAW UNTIL THEN I LEAVE THE JOB TO YOU AS WELL AS THE LAW OFFICE, WILLIAM SAID I WILL NOT MOVE A SINGLE THING OF YOURS” AS LINCOLN LEFT MARY TODD LINCOLN SAID AND GOOD RIDENCE TO YOU YOU SAVAGE .“ AND IT WASN’T UNTILL 1867 THAT WILLIAM DID ANYTHING WITH LINCOLNS THINGS.
