  4. Photosynthesis formula • Light energy + H2O + CO2C6H12O6 + O2

  5. Does that formula look familiar? • It is the opposite of aerobic cellular respiration • C6H12O6 + O2 H2O + CO2 + ATP

  6. Much of the carbon dioxide produced by green plants is not excreted as a metabolic waste because it (1) can be used for photosynthesis (2) is too large to pass through cell membranes (3) is needed for cellular respiration (4) can be used for the synthesis of proteins

  9. What is chlorophyll? • Green pigment in chloroplasts responsible for absorbing light energy

Are there other pigments in plants? • Yes, we know this from a method called chromatography which separates mixtures • PROCEDURE • Place a small drop of sample onto a piece of paper • Paper is placed in a small amount of solvent • As solvent travels up the paper by capillary action, pigments separate out based on polarity

  11. Why are plants green? • Chloroplasts reflect green light

  12. Plants use glucose for… • Food • Generate ATP during cellular respiration • Used as a raw material for building more complex molecules • Cell wall is made from cellulose which is a polymer made of repeating glucose molecules • Plants also store glucose as starch

  13. What organisms photosynthesize? • Plants • Protists (Euglena, Algae) • Bacteria • They are called autotrophs because they make their own food
