  3. All in All… • There were many steps taken to reach the System of Checks & Balances. • The Great Compromise • Three- Fifths Compromise • Federalism • Checks & Balances

  4. Chronological Order… • The Great Compromise • The Virginia Plan • The New Jersey Plan • The Great Compromise Itself • Three-Fifths Compromise • The Living Constitution • Federalist government • Checks & Balances

  5. The Great Compromise… • The Virginia Plan: • Gave more power to National Government • Allowed a Bicameral Legislature • The number in both houses was based on the population

  6. The Great Compromise… • The New Jersey Plan: • Gave more power to state government • Allowed a Unicameral Legislature • The number of representatives is equal from each state

  7. The Great Compromise… • The Great Compromise: • Allowed a Bicameral Legislature. • The number of representatives was based on the state population in lower house. • The number of representatives was equal from each state in upper house.

  8. Three-Fifths Compromise… • Three-Fifths Compromise: • Under this agreement, only three-fifths of a state’s slave population would count when determining representation.

The living Constitution.. • Popular Sovereignty • The idea that political authority belongs to the people. • Federalist Government • Federalism: The sharing of power between a central government and the states that make up a country. • Checks & Balances • Legislative Branch: Also called Congress, is responsible for proposing and passing laws. • Executive Branch: Includes the president and the departments that help run the government • Judicial Branch: Made up of all the national courts. • Checks & Balances: Keeps any branch of government from becoming to powerful.
