  • Farmland Protection Ordinance - 2001

    • Created Kane County Farmland Protection Commission

    • Gave Kane County Board authority to buy or accept donated development rights from land owners on a voluntary basis

    • Owners extinguish those rights to keep farmland under an agricultural conservation easement in perpetuity

  • To date, over 5,500 acres of prime farmland have been permanently protected

  • 30 family owned or operated farms have participated in the program

  • Most farms produce corn and/or soybeans for the global market

The Health Impact Assessment (HIA) examines the health outcomes if the ordinance is amended to promote participating farms of all sizes and locations within the county to grow fruits, vegetables, dairy and meats for local consumption, particularly reaching the county’s most vulnerable populations.
