  1. Blogging is Elementary By Christine Ruder Truman Elementary 3rd Grade Teacher

  2. The Motivation… I was tired of hearing the moaning and groaning every day when I asked my students to get out their pencils and write in their journals. Not writing at all was not an option. I wanted to motivate them in some way.

  3. The Idea… I noticed the kids being excited anytime that we used computers. I decided to tap into that excitement and create a class blog.

  4. What is a blog? A blog is basically an online journal. It is a combination of the words “web” and “log”. The purposes of blogs vary from commercial to personal to news commentary.

  6. For my class, I chose Kidblog.

Instructional Objectives The students will: write a paragraph or more in response to a prompt using proper spelling, grammar, and sentence structure will edit their writing for publication on a blog describe what a blog is log into a blog and input their paragraph with proper formatting publish their blog post demonstrate proper use of online safety rules

  8. Lesson Materials Writing journal Drawing paper and colored pencils Scanner One computer for students Computer lab (optional) Internet, computer, projector Interactive white board (optional) Blog account for the class

  10. What is a blog? Define a blog. Look at examples of blogs with your students. Watch the BrainPOP video (free!): Blogs Create a list of blog topics.

  11. Who is my audience?Writing a good paragraph. Review the writing process. Review capitalization, punctuation, spelling, and grammar. Decide on the audience and purpose for writing. Assign their topic: “What is a blog?” Students should peer edit and make corrections. Orally share finished product (if time).

  12. Blogging Safety Rules Discuss online safety. Watch the BrainPOP video (free!): Online Safety Develop a list of safety rules to follow online. Students create an “avatar” to be scanned in and used on the blog. Send home an informational note about your blog so that parents can access it. You may also consider sending home a “permission to blog” paper for the parents to sign.

  13. Online Safety Rules Never share any personal information. Never post a picture of yourself with your name. Never share photos that could identify where you live or go to school. Keep comments positive. Never share your password or log in information with anyone. All posts and comments will be reviewed by the teacher before being posted on the web. Anyone who does not follow these rules will have their blogging privileges revoked.

  14. Logging in and Blogging Show the students how to log in. Demonstrate as a class how to create a post and publish the post. Show the students how to log out. Have the students log in and type in their “What is a blog?” paragraphs from their journal.

  17. Follow Up Choose a different student to post a blog every day. Keep a list of students who have blogged and who need to blog. Take students to the computer lab to blog all at once. Share the URL with parents and encourage them to post comments.

  18. Potential Concerns Students may not have enough familiarity with the keyboard which will cause them to take longer with their typing. Parents may object to their child’s work being posted on the web. Students may forget their login information or password. Internet may be down.

  23. Final Thoughts… I plan on randomly choosing students (based on a well written journal entry) to post their writing on our class blog page on a daily basis. On a weekly basis, I want to take the students to our computer lab and everybody posts on their individual blog page. The students are enthralled with the idea that there are people in China or Australia who can log on the computer and read their thoughts. This has motivated them to write more and their writing has improved.
