The Medieval Church as Europe became Christianized, those who did not belong to the Church were viewed with suspicion priests administered sacraments (necessary for salvation), explained the Bible, provided moral guidance and helped the sick and needy Christians paid a tithe (tax) of 1/10 of their income to the Church (sometimes in goods) the Church protected women (ex: minimum age for marriage) but also punished them more harshly than men for the same offenses

The Medieval Church monks in monasteries and nuns in convents devoted themselves to spiritual lives of prayer, work and study they also looked after the poor and sick, set up schools, and provided lodging to travelers and pilgrims, while others became missionaries meanwhile, popes claimed papal supremacy over secular leaders and educated Churchmen often advised secular leaders the Church developed canon law (based on religious teachings) and its own courts
