OMHA Coach Mentorship Program:WHAT MENTORSHIP IS … • A coach driven support system • An opportunity to access information and resources • An opportunity to link with someone as a “human resource” • It is a belief that coaching is the key to player development; better coaches produce a better person and player

  3. OMHA Coach Mentorship Program:WHAT MENTORSHIP ISN’T … • A compulsory program • A program the “evaluates” on a formal basis • A program that requires financial output

OMHA Coach Mentorship Program:BACKGROUND • Molson Open Ice Summit 1999. • One of the most important recommendations was a national mentorship program.It was felt the key to developing players was good coaching. • Attempt to fill the gap between coaches clinics and the practical reality of coaching. • Hockey Canada and the 13 branches are involved in the development and administration of the NCMP. • Mentorship is voluntary and “coach driven”.

  5. We like to think of the NCMP as : It is an opportunity for coaches at all levels to have access to someone with experience and ideas that might help them in their coaching experience.It is a support mechanism for those who wish to become involved.We will do our best to respond to YOUR needs.

  6. OMHA Coach Mentorship Program:PURPOSE The purpose of this program is for mentoring of coaches at all levels, specifically for minor hockey as they are the key to the future of coaching in the OMHA.

OMHA Coach Mentorship Program:GOALS • To provide a coach mentor with a foundation of definitions and descriptions that will enhance understanding of the roles and responsibilities of the coach mentor and the coach being mentored. • To convey a complete description of mentorship programs within Ontario Minor Hockey Association

OMHA Coach Mentorship Program:GOALS • To provide a forum for discussion and come to a consensus of what good teaching practices are for a hockey coach. • To be practical and involve the Mentors in all activities as much as possible. • To develop a collection of “best practices” and establish a framework of ideas that will be a useful tool to us Mentors in the field

OMHA Coach Mentorship Program:GOALS • To ensure that the coach mentors understand their significant leadership role in delivering a program designed to support coaching development in the OMHA. • To set a positive example as a coach mentor in all hockey related activities. • To demonstrate a professional approach in the delivery of mentoring activities that will give the mentored coach feelings of security and confidence

OMHA Coach Mentorship Program:GOALS • To provide examples of effective organizational strategies that will increase coaching efficiencies • To provide practical examples of tools that will support coaches in their coaching activities. • To provide practical steps in setting up a mentoring environment with specific activities for coach mentors and mentorees.

  11. OMHA Coach Mentorship Program:DEFINITIONS Mentor: a wise and trusted, teacher, advisor counselor, instructor, tutor, trainer. Mentoree:an individual who has the desire commitment, and initiative to expand and develop his/her expertise and/or career goals by listening to, learning from, and working with a trusted advisor and counselor.

OMHA Coach Mentorship Program:DEFINITIONS • Mentoringa relationship between a guide (mentor) and a coach which enables the coach to become more successful in all aspects of his/her coaching skills. • Mentoring involves…stimulating and managing the individual growth necessary to support coaching performance.

  14. OMHA Coach Mentorship Program:RESPONSIBILITIES OF A COACH MENTOR • Vision and insight • Advice and counsel • Support and encouragement • Self-confident and improved self esteem • Safer environment • Failure control • Insight into the sport culture • Role model • Tasks that will challenge

  15. Mentorship can take many forms.This is not a compulsory program and there is no obligation to become involved.We simply have a group on mentors who are willing to give their time to offer any assistance they can to other coaches. Mentors are volunteers.

  17. OMHA Coach Mentorship Program:TIPS FOR THE MENTOR • Setting up a meeting schedule and sticking to it. • Picking up the telephone • Listening and asking a lot of questions • Keeping the Mentoree moving • Promoting • Record keeping

  18. OMHA Coach Mentorship Program:TIPS FOR THE MENTOREE • Be on time • Accept the mentor’s advice • Complete assignments on time • Be honest • Maintain a journal • Provide a coaching history • Ask questions and listen carefully.

OMHA Coach Mentorship Program:RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE MENTOREE • Dedication toward improving current knowledge and competency level. • Assessing his/her individual needs and current abilities. • Construct a Coach Development Plan. • Actively participating in mentoring plan. • Taking advantage of the process. • Willing to accept the advice of the Mentor. • Respecting the rules of confidentiality. • Developing the skills of ethical and professional conduct.

  20. OMHA Coach Mentorship Program:RESOURCE GUIDE The resource guide has been divided into three major sections. These sections are aligned with the curriculum of the NCCP and are based the coach as a Leader, Teacher, and Organizer.

OMHA Coach Mentorship Program:SUMMARY • Mentoring is a development process involving someone with more experience-a MENTOR- that is designed to help and guide less experienced individuals. • Mentoring is a form of coaching and visa versa. • A formalized mentoring program can enhance coach education and training • It provides insight to the ART of COACHING • The success of any mentoring is a commitment from all involved.

  35. OMHA Coach Mentorship Program:PRACTICE PLAN “To many coaches, the most time consuming and perhaps threatening part of coaching a hockey team is running practices. It takes time and experience to plan and compile an effective practice session. One of the most important aspects of mentoring is helping coaches become good practice planners.”

OMHA Coach Mentorship Program:TYPES OF LEARNING • Audio learners understand and observe verbal instructions easily. • Visual learners learn best from information they see or read • Tactical learners learn best by “touch” handling materials and being involved in concrete activity. • Kinesthetic learners learn best by doing and being involved in an activity.

  42. OMHA Coach Mentorship Program:COACH DEVELOPMENT PLAN In order for a coach to target the specific skill areas a coach has determined to be a priority, a Coach Development Plan helps to clearly articulate the areas of need. • What are the benefits of CDP? • What are the drawbacks of a CDP?

OMHA Coach Mentorship Program:SPECIALTY QUESTIONS • The National Coach Mentorship Advisory Committee has developed 10 Specialty Clinics. • These are seminars for coaches/minor hockey associations who may find the information useful. We ask that hosts pay for any local expenses such as ice, advertising, venue etc.
