  3. Number of People House of Representatives Based on population/proportional representation 435 members total NJ has 12 Senate Based on Equal Representation 2 per state= 100 members

  4. Who has the power? • Speaker of the House controls what happens in the House of Representatives • Senate Majority Leader controls the Senate

  5. Getting Re-elected • House of Representatives • Elected every 2 years • Re-elected 90% of the time • Senate • Every 6 years • Elections more competitive /re-election not as easy

  6. Scheduling • House • Rules and Committees controlled by party with majority • Senate • More cooperation between parties

  7. Time for Debates • House- one hour for debate • Senate- unlimited until cloture (vote to end the discussion) • VOCABULARY ALERT:Filibuster: tactics used, especially prolonged speechmaking, for the purpose of delaying legislative action/bill

  8. Knowledge • House • Need to know more about specific issues that impact their district • Expert on their committee issue • Senate • Needs to know about all issues in the state and government affairs

  9. Atmosphere • House has strict rules • Senate less rules since there are less members, more relaxed atmosphere
