  2. History • Partnership between: - Age Concern Gwynedd a Mon - Anglesey County Council - Bangor University • Succeeded in gaining a grant of £495,000 from the Big Lottery. • Establish three Age Well centres on Anglesey

  3. Statistics • Anglesey has a population of 66,829 (Anglesey Life 2007) with a growing population of older people. • 22% is over retirement age 15,142 • 2.3% Aged over 85 • 17% population gaining un-paid care.

  4. Statistics (Cont) • Anglesey has above average of households containing older people living alone. 16.2% households are lone pensioners compared with Wales average of 14.4 % • People over 75 living alone in Wales is 41.2% compared with 43% on Anglesey (census 2001)

  5. Long Term Illness • People over the age of 65 self reporting with long term illness is 51.4% (Census 2001) • Welsh Health Survey estimates 22.3% of adult population on Anglesey suffering from arthritis. • 905 cases of Dementia/Alzheimers suffers on Anglesey, this is expected to rise 33% over the next 10 years.

  6. Purpose of Age Well Centres • Help people to become healthier both in the short and the long term. • Provide activities that relate to current government objective’s, areas such as exercise, diet, chronic illness and support for people with mental health problems. • Help people and organisations to learn, and to help to build relationships within communities. • Use a variety of strategies to involve local people in project planning and delivery, enabling them to tackle the issues that affect their lives.

  7. Main Outcomes for Older People • Empower older people through involving them in decision making processes. • Ensure sustainability of project through grants, training and volunteering. • Refurbishment of existing community venue. • Access to a range of services and information. • Break down the barriers between the generations. • Improve social networks.
