  1. Maree Migration The Aboriginal people have lived in Australia for at least for 40 000 years, and are indigenous to Australia. In 1788, 160 000 European convicts were shipped to Australian. They were the first migrants. From the 1790s, free immigrants started coming to Australia. In the 1820s the wool industry needed more labour. The British people emigrated to find work in Australia and to escape the poverty and unemployment of England. In the 1840s Irish immigrants came to Australia to escape the potato famine in Ireland. In the 1950s and 1960s, migrants came to Australia from the Netherlands, Germany, Italy, Greece, Turkey and Yugoslavia. Today, Australian migration is global, with migrants from over 185 countries.
