  1. The Integration of Technologies in the Classroom Program of Placido del Mundo Elementary School Gateway to Pupils’ Learning JOSEPH ACIO 6 September 2006

  2. Learners today are faced with a competitive and demanding future. If unprepared, their chances of success are greatly reduced. Thus, we must give them tools to be successful in a high-tech world. We must help them shape their futures with highly developed computer skills. Placido Del Mundo Elementary School, a pilot school in the Division of Quezon City, in its quest to enable its learners to be highly competitive has adopted Integration of Technologies in the Classroom (ITC). These experimental endeavors were introduced to Grades I to VI with two sections per grade. These classes use the Station Rotation Approach wherein pupils are practice to move around, manipulate hands on materials and work cooperatively with peers.

  3. Pupils orientation is a very important component of ITC. Before starting the station rotation, they are taught to follow directions, set goals, record and file work, use equipment properly, cooperate with fellow pupils, and move calmly from station to station.

  4. After practicing the procedures for a day or two, they will start the initial activity. After 20 minutes of working in the station assigned, using a bell as a cue, the children goes to the next station and work with another level of activity, specially the computer station wherein software is assigned for them to work with. The said station rotation lasts for three to four days and all unfinished works are to be finished during Fridays. Evaluation of work is done using work logs and portfolios. In this process, the children are given the opportunity for self evaluation. Thus, eventually will make them realized their self-worth and leadership capabilities.

  5. The pupils must go to the following stations:

  6. Computer Station This station is used to enhance learning outcomes through educational soft wares. Computer Station

  7. Exploration Station This station provides different materials for the pupils to explore and suit their curiosity. Exploration Station

  8. Challenge Station This station provides different challenging problems for the children to solve. Challenge Station

  9. Construction Station This station provides hands-on activities in which creativity of the learner is developed. Construction Station

  10. Textbook Station This station strengthen the skills learned through answering exercises found in their books or other books chosen by the teacher. Textbook Station

  11. Teacher Station In this station, teacher present lesson through direct instruction and works with individual pupils as the need arises during station time. Teacher Station

  12. The above mention stations contain Task Cards where the children read instruction on what to do, Answer Sheet, varied technology – integrated materials and overhead projector where the exercises are written. Warning devices like flag lets, flashcards and station rotation chart are present for the children to use when problems arise or when they finish assigned task, Using these warning devices, noise and unsolved problems will be minimized. The teacher , on the other hand, will afford more time to circulate and interact with pupils.

  13. After the initial implementation which was funded by the Division of City Schools, Quezon City, the project was institutionalized. The program produced very positive benefits with regards to self-concept, emotional and social maturity. Furthermore, there had been overwhelming strong satisfaction from parents. The pupils, too, manifested tremendous difference in academic achievement and social aspects. The program has its ups and downs. Faced with the prospect of upgrading and purchasing new equipment, the school was thrown into an arena full of dashing operating systems, developing uncertainties and software turmoil. However, with the interventions and great help from the parents, PTCA Officers, School Officials and NGOs, problems were solved and the program continues to the present.

  14. The breadth of success of the PDMES ITC Program results from a unique teaching philosophy that pupils of all ages learn best in an interactive, creative environment that enables them to explore, challenge and discover. Our pupils, regardless of capabilities and background, receive hands-on instruction at the computer and through station rotation, are confronted with varied activities that will stimulate their desire to become active constructors of knowledge and to be equipped with skills needed to ensure competitiveness. As educators, let us not overlook the most important elements to ensure success in computer literacy: Appropriate hardware and software, computer-literate staff and technology driven curriculum.

  15. The innovation made by Placido Del Mundo Elementary School is a dream come true, organized and implemented by committed, resourceful and dedicated educators who are determined to produce well-rounded individuals, ready to face the challenges brought about by the fast changing world. As we continue the journey, we are hoping for the best that yet to come. Together, let us join hands and make things happen.
