  10. Aerospace Picnic

  11. Workshops • MESA • Model Rocket Basics • Aerodynamics • Paper Plane • Launched Glider • Windmill • Maryland Engineering Challenges • Paper Plane • Electric Cargo Challenge

  12. Judging • MESA Regional and State Competitions • Maryland Engineering Challenges • Paper Airplane • Electric Cargo Challenge • Montgomery Fair • 4-H Aerospace Club • Rockets • Airplanes

  13. And… • MESA Career Fair • Classroom Visits • Event Visits • Flying Principal • You Tell Us!

  14. Maryland Engineering Challenges

  15. Elementary School Paper Plane Challenge • February Each Year • 4 students per team – Written Report – Oral Interview - Timed Build – Jumbo Paper Clip is “Passenger” • Performance Score: Length x Speed x Accuracy • Length = Length of Flight • Speed = Length of Flight / Time of Flight • Accuracy = 1 – Deviation / Length of Flight • Deviation is distance from center line • Contact Tom Milnes at Thomas.Milnes@jhuapl.edu for latest rules.

  16. Setup for Paper Plane Challenge d = deviation Speed = Length / Time* Accuracy = (1-d/L) L = Length Start Line *Time from throw to plane stops sliding on floor - “Gate Time” rather than “Landing Time”

  17. MESA Participants

  18. MESA Participants

  19. High School Electric Cargo Plane Challenge • New MESA Competition!!!! • Plane built by student teams of 1-4 students must complete one lap of tethered flight with and without cargo about a “power pole” (which distributes electrical power via the tether) • Plane must be 8” off the ground at all times • Other Components • Report • Oral Interview • Design Score • Contact Tom Milnes at Thomas.Milnes@jhuapl.edu for latest rules.
