  2. Why We Round • Save time and do less work. • Example: You go see a movie at Tinseltown. You bring 25 dollars. • Ticket: $8.75 • Popcorn: $4.55 • Pop: $3.20 • Candy: $2.65 • About how much money will you have left for the arcade?

  3. Round to Nearest Dollar • $8.75 -> 9.00 • $4.55 -> 5.00 • $3.20 -> 3.00 • $2.65 -> 3.00 • You will have about 5 dollars left over. • 9.00 + 5.00 3.00 3.00 $20.00

  4. How to Round • Underline the place that you want to round to. • Draw an arrow or look at the digit to its right. • If it is a 5 or higher raise the underline digit by 1. If it is 4 or below don’t change the underline digit. • Now change all the digits to the right of the underline to zeros. If the zeros are to the right of the decimal point they disappear.

  5. REMEMBER!!! • 5 or above give a shove. 4 or below leave go.

  6. Example • Round to the Nearest Thousand 15,767 • The 7 tells tell the five to go up by one to a six. • Then you change every number to the right of the underline to zero and your answer is • 16,000

  7. Examples • Round to Nearest Hundred • 1,978 • 25,320 • 450,123 • Round to Nearest tenth • 45.38 • 52.76 • 127,230.589
