  1. Southeast Native Americans. Tyler Sutton, Oneisha Leonard, Brieanna Downey

  2. Southeast Native Indians • Most were located in Georgia, North & South Carolina, Virginia, Kentucky and Tennessee.

  3. Related Groups • Large groups like the Cherokee, the Chickasaw and the Creek lived in the northern part of the region. Tribes like the Seminole lived in the southern area. • The Cherokee, Chickasaw, Creek, Chocotaw and the Seminole were part of a group called “ The Five Civilized Tribes “ . • Contrary to belief, this was not an alliance. They received this name from white settlers because they were early converters of Christianity.

Southeast Native Americans • Lived in many different places but mostly North Carolina and Virginia. • They had many tribes ( over 30 ) . • The most famous being the Powhatans. • They lived in long houses that only had one door. • They houses were made out of elm poles and covered by elm bark. • Instead of beds, they slept on shelves on the walls. • The houses included two levels ; • * One for eating and sleeping • * One for storage

  5. Clothing • Wore a variety of clothing. • In the Summer they wore almost nothing because it was way to hot. • In the Winter they wore : cloaks, leggings and moccasins made from the bark of many trees.

  6. Art • They had very little art but they made different types of jewelry.

  7. Language • Unfortunately , the Chesapeake Native Americans left no written records of their life before the Europeans came along. • Most of what we know about them comes from the writing of : • Henry Spelman • Thomas Hariot • But mostly from the journals of Captain John Smith.

  8. Other Activities • They didn't’t have many activities. • The men fished. • The woman cooked and took care of the family. • The children played in open fields and down by lakes.

  9. Food • They gathered foods like : oysters, strawberries, raspberries, grapes, gooseberries, chestnuts, walnuts, buckeyes and acorns. • They hunted : deer, bear, geese, turkeys, beavers, otters and turtles. • They fished for : many different types of fish but mostly herrings. • They grew : corn, beans and tokawhoughe ( a Indian variety of potato )

  10. Daily Life Men ; Farming, hunting, fishing Women ; gathering, cooking and taking care of family • Very young children played while the older children went with their parents to learn how to provide for themselves.

  11. Warfare • When the Europeans first arrived in North America, the Native Americans hated them. • But they later treated them kindly. • They showed the colonist their food and they traded. • Things traded among them included : • * beaver skins • * pearls • * copper • * iron

  12. Famous Members • Pocahontas ( Chief Powhatan’s Daughter ) It means ‘ playful one ‘ Her real name was Matoska. She is a hero to Euro-Americans becauseIt was said that she saved John Smiths life when her father was about to kill him but this is not true. Pocahontas hated John Smith and after John Smith spread this rumor after she became known in England.

  13. Are they still around ? • There are some still around ( not a lot ) but they live mostly in North Carolina and of course Chesapeake Bay.
