  1. To what extent could the encouragement of free market economies lead to an increase in personal liberty? By Thusy Senthilvel

  2. Project: Initial Planning • First part of the EPQ • Choose an evaluative title to research into • Must be linked to your intended choice of degree at university i.e. Economics • Why choose to talk about free market economies? • Relevant to Economics • Controversial topic which relates to modern Economics

  3. Project: Project Proposal • Made up of 3 separate parts such as Parts A, B &C • Used to explain the objective of the EPQ and what the expected conclusion would be • My main aim was to see if free market economies did lead to an increase in personal liberty

  4. Project: Planning Review • Talking to my supervisor to identify things to concentrate on • Choosing whether to stick to my title or to change it slightly • Choosing my final research questions • How the planning review helped; • Allowed me to create a balanced argument

  5. Project: Mid Project Review • Very important stage as final question couldn’t be changed after this stage • Time plan to spread workload out • Not as successful as I had hoped but gave an real indication as to whether I was doing enough or not

  6. Project: End of Project Review • Showed whether my work for my EPQ was satisfactory or not • Meant that the extra research during draft was needed • Supervisors comments meaning I may have had to have a look into changing my question

  7. The question • ‘To what extent could the encouragement of free market economies lead to an increase in personal liberty?’ • 'To what extent could the encouragement of free market economies in the place of socialism/communism result in a increase in personal liberty?’

  8. Overview of my report • Defining ‘free market economies’ • Defining ‘personal liberty’ • Arguments for free market economies increasing personal liberty • Arguments against free market economies increasing personal liberty

  9. Defining Free market economies • General Definition • Adam Smith’s ideas on free markets • Friedrich A. Hayek's ideas on free markets • J.S Mill’s ideas on free markets • Milton Friedman’s ideas on free markets

  10. Defining Personal Liberty • General Definition • Adam Smith’s definition • Friedrich A. Hayek's Definition • J.S Mill on liberty

  11. If I was able to redo and improve my project • I’d prevent having second thoughts about my actual question • Manage my time a lot better • Cutting down on being very descriptive • Organise notes efficiently • Actually do proper research that’s related to the question • Ensure I have enough to write about on both sides of the argument • Leave enough time to complete every stage of the project
