  1. View from Lab Management R. McKeown DNP12 Satellite Meeting October 25, 2012

  2. Outline • PAC and science program • New Projects Update • Super Bigbite Spectrometer (SBS) • MOLLER • SoLID • others • NSAC Subcommittee • MEIC

  3. PAC 39 Result (June 2012) • Considered 13 new proposals, 6 previously conditionally approved, 3 Letters of Intent, • 5 Proposals recommended for Approval • 6 Proposals deferred • 5 Conditionally approved (C1 – do not return to PAC) • 3 Conditionally approved (C2 - must return to PAC)

  4. 12 GeV Approved Experiments by Physics Topics

  5. 12 GeVApproved Experiments by PAC Days More than 7 years of approved experiments

  6. Proposal for Backlog Management Re-evaluate Priorities Timing: ~2015 Charge: select high impact experiments for 3 years (beyond commissioning) • Nominally consider about 300 pac-days per hall • Start with A rated approved experiments • (+ selected others?) • Equip. availability input from Hall Leaders

  7. Other PAC Issues • New charge (no longer “top ½ of first 5 years”) • Reconsider proposal process for Hall B (parallel running) – possible impact on other halls (e.g., SoLID, Hall D) • New categories for resource availability: - Stage I: resources need to be identified/obtained - Stage II: resources are essentially available

  8. Future Projects • Super BigBite Spectrometer • (Approved for FY13-15 construction) • - high Q2 form factors • - SIDIS • MOLLER experiment • (MIE – FY14-18?) • - Standard Model Test • SoLID (SIDIS, PVDIS) • Chinese collaboration • CLEO Solenoid? • Directors review: 2012-3

  9. Other Projects/Upgrades • Windowless target for proton charge radius experiment (NSF/MRI) • Hall B (CLAS12): -Forward tagger (NSF/MRI + INFN) - planning for one-sector RICH for Hall B - Micromegas for CLAS12 (IRFU agreement) • Backward-nucleon detector (Israel) and planning for p0 spectrometer in Hall C • Planning for Cherenkov and FCAL upgrade in Hall D These are upgrades/enhancements to 12 GeV projects, still under development (various degrees).

  10. Status: A’ Experiments • APEX - completed test run (published) - awaiting radiation impact review, $$ • HPS - completed parasitic test run, now C1 - review results, promote C1 Approval? - HEP funding… • DarkLIGHT - completed test run at FEL - heldbriefing Oct. 22 for approval – more HW due - HEP/NP funding?

  11. Charge to NSAC (4-5-2012)

  12. NSAC subcommittee events • Subcommittee met May 15 for planning • Presentations to subcommittee Sept. 7-9 • NSAC, Sept. 21 • Fall DNP (10/24-27 - Newport Beach, CA) - Thurs. evening: mini-Town meetings - Fri. evening: DNP Town Meeting • Subcommittee meeting ~mid-Nov.? • Report due: December 2012

  13. White Paper 1Executive Summary 2Meson Spectroscopy, Hybrid Mesons & Confinement 3The Internal Structure of Hadrons 4QCD and Nuclei 5The Standard Model and Beyond 6Appendix A: Experimental Equipment

  15. Electron Ion Collider NSAC 2007 Long-Range Plan: “An Electron-Ion Collider (EIC)with polarized beams has been embraced by the U.S. nuclear science community as embodying the vision for reaching the next QCD frontier. EIC would provide unique capabilities for the study of QCD well beyond those available at existing facilities worldwide and complementary to those planned for the next generation of accelerators in Europe and Asia.” • White Paper developed by JLab/BNL communities, posted for comment • JLab MEIC design well-developed, design report posted • Next NSAC Long Range Plan?

  16. MEIC Design Report • ArXiv: 1209.0757 • Stable design for 3 years

  17. Medium Energy EIC@JLab SRF linac Pre-booster Warm large booster (up to 20 GeV) Transfer beam line Ion source Cold ion collider ring (up to 100 GeV) Electron collider ring (3 to 12 GeV) Medium energy IP Injector • JLab Concept • Initial configuration (MEIC): • 3-11 GeV on 20-100 GeVep/eAcollider • fully-polarized, longitudinal and transverse • luminosity: up to few x 1034 e-nucleons cm-2s-1 • Upgradable to higher energies (250 GeV protons) 12 GeV CEBAF

  19. Summary • PAC process evolving to match 12 GeV program • Revisit priorities with PAC in ~2015 • Queue of projects is making progress • We provided much input to NSAC subcommittee • MEIC design, science case, moving forward
