  1. Nursing With A Difference“Let each day be your masterpiece” Galatians 6:9 In Collaboration with Franklin Branch of the NZ Nurses Organization Presents International Nurses Week

  2. LITIGATION Litigation triggers our emotions and engenders and brings to the surface deep seated reactions: Fear Anger Resentment Inadequacy Guilt

  3. NURSING 2 or 3 DIMENSIONAL? • Conventions over time can be seen to create a strong three dimensional space GOD – MAN – ENVIRONMENT • Contemporary conventions exclude the spiritual notion of sovereignty to focus on the physical secular notion on a two dimensional surface MAN the ECONOMIST carving out his territorial space.

  4. GLOBAL PROBLEM • Fear > • Territorial suspicion • Professional isolation • Strategy, program and patient-service failure • Staffing turnover and instability • Self-preservation.

  5. POWER, CONTROL, MONEY. - Health care is big business - Quality control is more about financial return than the health of the peoples and the Nation. • Mounting public interest. • Cry for dedicated Nurses

  6. ADVERSE PUBLICITY • Nurses depicted in a negative deprecating manner. • Low expectation of the Nurse’s intelligence. • Nursing responsibility and patient-care activities and practice denigrated.

  7. NURSE SUPPORT SYSTEMS • NZ Nursing Council checks and balances. • ICN Nursing wisdom in guidelines and recommendations • WHO bulletins • Selective Nursing critiques – Internet What is missing?

  8. CONSIDER YOUR WAYS! The increasing very real fear of litigation is currently being negatively influenced by the wisdom of the world e.g., time consuming paper war. Can it be that due to our indifference to God, to His laws and to His commandments, that we are now trapped in an invidious position of crippling, soul-destroying fear of litigation and its consequences?

  9. FAITH • Nowhere do we find any reference to seeking the wisdom andcounsel of God in the administration and development of the Health Services including Nursing. God’s word is clear “I will shake all nations, and they shall come to the Desire of All Nations, and I will fill the temple with glory…the silver is mine, and the gold is mine…the glory of the latter temple shall be greater than the former.” Haggai 2:7 (This includes the Nursing Profession and Health Services.) The choice is ours!

  10. GET WISDOM Wisdom of man has produced • Volatile political environments that do not make for positive practice environments • Male and female oppression and misplaced liberalization adversely affects family life. • Increased mobility and rapid transfer of health practitioners affecting family life. • Diversity without unity.

  11. WISDOM, FROM WHAT SOURCE! Wisdom =knowledge guided by understanding Sources – “The Spirit of God in wisdom, in understanding, in knowledge and in all manner of workmanship” Exodus 31:3 “Observe and teach the statutes and the judgments the LORD God is giving that you may live” Deuteronomy 4:1 “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom.” Proverbs 9 :9-10

  12. SOURCE OF WISDOM CONT. • Wisdom is ascribed by God to all whose hearts are stirred toward Him. • Discernment by the wise who act according to the commandments of God, in every sphere of life. • “Christ Jesus, who became for us wisdom from God - and righteousness and sanctification and redemption.” 1 Corinthians 1:30

  13. VALUE OF WISDOM • Gives happiness • Keeps us from evil • Better than rubies • May be acquired • Makes strong • Better than weapons • Produces good fruit The Wisdom of God is universal, infinite, unsearchable, mighty and perfect and therefore extremely practical in everyday life. • Benefits for many • Excels folly • Above gold in value • Gives life • Ensures stability

  14. LIMITATIONS OF WISDOM • Cannot save us • Cause of self-glory • Can pervert • Is nothing without God • Can corrupt • Of this world is foolishness • Earthly and sensual Let Nursing wisdom not continue in the wisdom of man but become a demonstration of the Spirit and power of God.

  15. THE FEAR OF GOD Proverbs • “Give instruction to a wise man and he will be still wiser. • Teach a just man and he will increase in learning.” Proverbs 9:9 • “You lust and do not have. You murder and covet and cannot obtain. You fight and war. Yet you do not have because you do not ask.” James 4:2 • “You ask and do not receive, because you ask amiss, that you may spend it on your pleasures.” James 4:3

  16. REALITY in the ART, SCIENCE and PRACTICE OF NURSING “That you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing. If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him. But let him ask in faith, with no doubting” James 1:4-5

  17. POWER TO CONTROL • “FOR THE LAW WAS GIVEN BY MOSES, BUT GRACE AND TRUTH CAME BY JESUS CHRIST.” John 1:17. Therefore Nurses may appropriate THE POWER OF GOD’S GRACE AND THE GRACE OF GOD’S POWER to OVERCOME the FEAR of LITIGATION.
