Southwark’s Joint Health and Wellbeing Strategy 2013-14 • A borough of contrasting poverty and wealth • High levels of deprivation: long-term unemployed, benefits claimants and overcrowding • Majority of wards in Southwark appear in the bottom quarter in England for wellbeing scores • Difference in life expectancy between the worst off and best off: 9.5 years (m) / 6.9 years for (w) • Fewer people dying early but inequalities persist • A third of deaths are ‘early’ – cancer and circulatory disease account for over half of these • Deaths from lung cancer are rising and the death rate for cardiovascular disease is 10% higher than the national average • Nearly half of local adults say they do no sport or active recreational pursuits • Rates of HIV and sexually transmitted diseases are high • Health challenges in childhood • High levels of child poverty and obesity • High numbers of children on child in need or child protection plans, especially for ‘neglect’ • An ageing population • An extra 900 people aged 85 or over expected by 2020 - increase of nearly 30% on current levels • High levels of deprivation, with almost half of over-65s claiming pension credits • Estimated 12,500 over-65s living with a long term illness, rising to over 17,000 by 2025 • Emergency admission rates for the over 75s are among the worst in the country

Health and Wellbeing – engagement themes Themes: Health and social care: • Primary and community care • Urgent and emergency care • Frail elderly Adult and community health and wellbeing: • Unhealthy/healthy lifestyles, and wider determinants of health • Adults with long term conditions and those dying prematurely • Adult mental health • The impact of community, cultural and economic needs on health and wellbeing • Access to services and perceptions of high-quality services Child health and wellbeing: • Young people and adults with special educational needs, learning difficulties or disability • Child and young people health, particularly risky adolescent behaviour and child mental health

Health and Wellbeing – engagement success Success depends on: • Participation from all Board member-organisations + the wider Southwark community – voluntary and community organisations • An effective approach to engagement and story collection • Access to residents, professionals and practitioners to collect stories • Promoting and holding events & sessions • People being willing to share their stories and help us shape better services and deliver better journeys

How to get involved • You can play an important part in making this an influential and powerful exercise • Facilitate collection of stories from your networks and staff • Attend one of our storytelling events in the New Year • Tell us your story! • Late March – storytelling celebration event to feed back the key messages to decision makers
