  1. Discussions Applied to the student’s educational Field

  2. Issuesto address: • Low achievement on TOEIC reading scores. • Limited vocabulary to understand texts in English. • Lack of motivation to work on obligatory discussions.

  3. Our Goals: • To develop effective strategies to increase students’ reading comprehension abilities. • To steer students’ motivation while working on discussions towards a better appreciation of the English language.

  4. Solution Strategies: • To provide students with material closely related to their own field of study. • To collect and adapt relevant material using resources such as library-on-line and the Internet.

  5. Media Used: • “Mensajes Internos” folder within the Blackboard Platform since it provided a more friendly environment than the “Discussions” application.

  6. We decided: • To use different kinds of discussions for variety of practice. • Grammar-oriented and vocabulary exercises. • Open development questions for students to apply previously acquired knowledge.

  9. Assessment: • TOEIC reading comprehension scores showed an increase in respect to that of previous years. • We found out that students response to online discussions improved in quality and quantity and they appeared more motivated. • Students got used to facing articles in both their native tongue and the target language.

  10. Finally: • This approach is not intended to become part of an ESP course. • Our Goals are a lot more general. • However, it is a big step towards that proficiency level.
