  2. 谢 - xiè • Is, by itself, a verb meaning “to thank” • It is also a surname • There are an estimated 2 million people with this name • Most live in southern China • It is a pictophonetic character: • Its radical, 言(yán) means word • Shè, 射, gives a hint at its pronunciation • It is most commonly repeated as 谢谢…xièxie • When it is xièxie, it means thank you • The second xie is neutral tone • To be more polite and exuberant, one can say 谢谢, 谢谢 (repeating the common expression)
