  2. GLASS INGREDIENTS • Common glass is made from: • sand or silica (SiO2) • sodium carbonate (Na2CO3) • limestone (CaCO3) • magnesium carbonate (MgCO3) • additives to improve the glass quality and to colour the glass.

  3. BASIC INFORMATION • glass is highly resistant to most chemicals • its big enemy is hydrofluoric acid • water can corode glass (depends on temperature) • good termal conductor • it is a common material enemy = nepřítel, conductor = vodič

  4. FIRST GLASS • wasmade by volcanoesandandiscalled OBSIDIAN = shiny, usuallyblack • obsidianwasformed, whenvulcanicmoltenlavacomesintocontactwithwaterandcoolsquickly • obsidianismostlyfromsilicon dioxide molten = tekutý

  5. humans have used natural glass to create simple tools for a long time it is not well known where and when the first man-made glass was produced this glass was used as a glaze to decorate objects it was also made in ancient Egypt and was valued as much as gold glass making was at that time a very slow process HISTORY

  6. GLASSBLOWING = process of forming glass glassblower = a person who blows glass

  9. GLASS AND ENVIRONMENT GLASS RECYCLING = the process of turning waste glass into usable products • 752,000 tons of glass is now recycled annually in the United Kingdom • the use of recycled glass in new containers helps save energy • it helps in ceramic manufacture, and it conserves raw materials, reduces energy consumption, and reduces the volume of waste sent to landfill. raw = surový, energy consumption = energetická spotřeba, landfill = skládka

  10. GLASS COLECTION Bottle Banks are very common near shopping centers, at civic amenity sites and in local neighborhoods. The first Bottle Bank was introduced by Stanley Race CBE, then president of the Glass Manufacturers’ Federation and Ron England in Barnsley the second was installed in Oxford. BB commonly stand beside collection points for other recyclable waste like paper, metals and plastics. There are now over 50,000 bottle banks in the United Kingdom GLASS AND ENVIRONMENT
